Preparation for Success in Business Leadership
For students with career goals in management, international business, consulting and finance, the designation as a Carey Fellow brings with it a mark of distinction, a stipend, and a certificate awarded at graduation recognizing the completion of additional requirements designed to prepare Fellows for leadership positions in global commerce.
How to Apply
Students who intend to declare a business minor can apply for the Carey Fellows program in one of two ways: 1) as incoming first-year students, or 2) during the fall semester of their sophomore year.
Applying as An Incoming First-Year Student
Incoming first-year students who intend to declare a business minor may apply to become Carey Fellows after they have received notification of their admission to the University of the South. The invitation to apply for the Carey Fellows program will be extended to all admitted students shortly after notification of their acceptance to the University. Incoming first-year students are required to demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and interest in business, including the intention to declare a business minor. The application process for incoming first-year students includes providing written responses to a few questions. The deadline for receipt of applications to become a first-year Carey Fellow is April 1. Applicants will be notified of the decision on their application by April 15.
Applying as A Sophomore
Sewanee students who have achieved a minimum 3.33 GPA and intend to declare a business minor may also apply to be Carey Fellows in the fall of their sophomore year. Applicants are required to submit an official transcript, obtain letters of recommendation, write an essay detailing their interest in the program, and complete an interview with the selection committee. The deadline to apply for the Carey Fellows program as a sophomore is October 13, 2017.
Program Structure and Requirements
Carey Fellows participate in a sequence of academic and skills-based experiences designed to equip them with the knowledge and training to succeed in global commerce. In addition to completing the requirements of the business minor, Carey Fellows complete two proseminar courses and spend an entire semester working in a paid, full-time internship facilitated by the Babson Center for Global Commerce. Carey Fellows are expected to earn a minimum 3.33 GPA by the end of their freshman year and maintain that minimum 3.33 GPA for the duration of their Sewanee career.
Events at the Babson Center for Global Commerce
Carey Fellows participate fully in the activities of the Babson Center and are required to attend a specified number of the Babson Center’s co-curricular events. These events bring leaders in business and global commerce to Sewanee throughout the academic year. During their first and sophomore years, Carey Fellows also engage in specially designed team building events and programs. All Carey Fellows should complete Econ 101: Introduction to Economics, Busi 215: Fundamentals of Financial Accounting, and Stat 204: Elementary Statistics by the end of their sophomore year.
In order to meet graduation requirements within four years and complete a semester-long internship, Carey Fellows participate in summer school the summer following their sophomore year. Fellows must complete two courses, normally Econ 360: Finance I and Phil 232: Business Ethics, during the summer school session. Students who have already completed one or both of these courses may pursue another schedule of summer courses in consultation with the pre-business advisor.
During the junior year, Carey Fellows spend one semester in an off-campus, paid internship, facilitated by the director of the Babson Center for Global Commerce. These companies have recently offered internships that give Carey Fellows real on-the-job learning and valuable networking experiences.
During their junior and senior years, Carey Fellows must complete two proseminar courses (Busi 352 and Busi 353). The proseminars draw on academic work within the business minor to enhance spreadsheet modeling, writing, and speaking skills as well as provide leadership training. One full course credit (four semester hours) will be awarded for completion of each proseminar. Enrollment in the proseminars, taught by the director of the Babson Center, is exclusively available to Carey Fellows.
